CARE

The Christian life is not lived alone. We are called to bear one another’s joys and sorrows, to pray for one another, and to make room for God’s mercy to take root among us. The ministries of care at All Souls arise from this shared calling: to be a people who tend gently to one another and to the world God loves.

Care takes many forms: a visit in the hospital, a prayer offered in hope, a blessing spoken over a home, a listening ear in a time of confusion. In each of these, we trust that Christ himself is present, healing what is wounded and deepening what is whole.

Our clergy and ministers are available to walk with you through whatever season you find yourself in. Whether you seek prayer, guidance, or practical help, we would be honored to accompany you as together we learn what it means to live in the mercy and peace of God.

  • Life brings both joy and sorrow, clarity and confusion. In all these seasons, our clergy desire to walk with you…to listen, to pray, and to help you discern God’s presence. Whether you are in the hospital, grieving a loss, or celebrating new life, we want to stand beside you as companions in Christ’s mercy.

  • Some in our community are called to pray with and for others, lifting their hearts to God in faith and friendship. In this work, the one who prays is not central; together we look toward Jesus, the true healer of body and soul. Healing prayer may not remove every pain, but it opens us to the love that restores us at the deepest level.

  • Our homes are sacred spaces where daily life unfolds… where we rest, eat, love, and welcome others. A house blessing invites God’s Spirit to dwell with us in these ordinary places, sanctifying them for compassion and joy. We would be honored to come, pray, and mark your home as a place of peace and hospitality.

  • There are moments when we need to speak our failings aloud and hear, again, the assurance of Christ’s forgiveness. In confession, a priest listens in confidence and speaks God’s word of mercy over the penitent. This quiet exchange restores the heart, reminding us that grace is greater than shame and that no failure lies beyond redemption.

  • Oil is an ancient sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence and healing power. In prayer and anointing, we entrust those who suffer to God’s compassion, asking for strength, peace, and renewal. We do not presume to know what God will do, but we trust that God always receives our prayers in love.

  • Every person of faith faces questions, doubts, and seasons of dryness or renewal. Our clergy are available to sit with you in these moments—to listen, to pray, and to help you attend to God’s quiet work in your life. We can also connect you with a trained spiritual director for regular companionship in discernment and growth.

  • When you are facing a difficult decision or seeking clarity, a discernment circle provides a sacred space for listening together. Drawing on the Quaker practice of a “clearness committee,” friends gather to pray, to ask wise questions, and to wait on the Spirit’s guidance. These circles do not aim to fix or advise but to help remove what clouds the heart so that God’s light may be seen.

  • When financial hardship arises, our common purse and mercy fund may offer practical assistance. This help expresses our belief that God’s generosity is meant to flow through the whole community for the sake of one another. We especially seek to serve our neighbors in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties, extending mercy as we have received it.
